According to AS, Leeds United are in the race to sign Elche defender Juan Cruz this summer – but face a massive battle for his signature.
It’s noted that Cruz has just one year left on his Elche deal, and could be sold as a result. There is now major interest emerging both at home and abroad.
Mallorca, Osasuna and Real Valladolid have allegedly made contact already. Getafe and Real Betis are keen too, whilst Leeds are following him ‘closely’.
Cruz has a €4million (£3.5million) release clause in his current deal, but the price will double if Elche win promotion. They currently occupy the final play-off spot in the Spanish Segunda.
Cruz has been an attacking sensation this season, racking up eight assists in 27 games. He can also play at centre back, but his forward-thinking approach should see him stay at left back.
He will though turn 28 this summer. Leeds may be reluctant to pay millions for that very reason. It’s certainly hard to see them paying £7million for Cruz.
Cruz has been something of a nomad to date. He’s been on the books of Atletico Madrid, Bologna, San Marino, Pistoiese, SS Reyes and Rayo Majadahonda, becoming something of a late bloomer.
Leeds may well look for a new left back with Barry Douglas disappointing this season, but even with Victor Orta allegedly pushing the interest in Cruz, it’s hard to see Leeds paying up for him.
