Jesse Marsch has now held talks over a move to Southampton exactly a week since losing his job at Leeds United.

That’s according to TalkSPORT, who claim that Southampton have now spoken to the American today.

The Saints sacked beleaguered manager Nathan Jones on Sunday, just three months after his arrival from Luton Town.

That move really didn’t work out as planned and Southampton must now make an appointment with an instant impact in mind.

The surprising frontrunner appears to be Marsch and discussions have already taken place with the Saints.

Marsch lost his job as Leeds United boss just last Monday and could make a swift return to management with Southampton.

Leeds have yet to find a replacement and Marsch could be back in a job before the Whites even secure a new manager.

Southampton wanted Jesse Marsch before Leeds exit

Southampton’s interest in Marsch isn’t a huge surprise.

The Times reported in October that Southampton fancied appointing Marsch to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl.

When Hasenhuttl did finally lose his job, Southampton went with Jones in a disastrous move.

The Saints will have surely maintained their interest in Marsch and whilst they would have had to pay compensation some months ago, that is no longer the case.

The timing of Jones’ sacking is interesting too; he was seemingly on the brink a week ago but Southampton have now made the move with Marsch available.

Marsch’s history with RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg may well fit what Southampton are seeking but his lack of results at Leeds this season must be a concern.

Leeds and Southampton are both desperate to stay up and Marsch could now land a job directly against the Whites.

That may raise fears of Marsch exacting revenge on Leeds – especially as the two sides meet at Elland Road later this month.
