Would Leeds United signing Emiliano Martinez provoke a sense of envy among Wolverhampton Wanderers fans?
According to the Argentinian edition of AS, Leeds United are interested in signing Arsenal and former Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Leeds could lose Andy Lonergan to Sunderland before Wednesday’s deadline and will therefore need a replacement for the veteran keeper.
Martinez previously impressed in the Championship during his stint with Wolves.
In August, fans of the Molineux club mocked Leeds’ pursuit of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson who, as predicted by Wanderers supporters, flopped at Elland Road, but signing Martinez would evoke a sense of envy in them.
The 25-year-old spent the 2015-16 on loan at Molineux from Arsenal and started their first 13 Championship games, but a two-month absence with injury saw Carl Ikeme capitalise and Martinez never played again.
But he was a popular figure at Wolves and surely some of their fans will be envious of the Leeds rumours. After all, they could do with strengthening their goalkeeping options.
Ikeme hasn’t played this season due to a serious illness and John Ruddy could do with better competition than Will Norris as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side look certain to return to the Premier League come May.
Of course, Leeds also need a top-drawer keeper and, as he proved during the first half of the 2015-16 campaign, Martinez could be the answer, but you wonder whether his head could be turned if Nuno asks the question.
