Although the Whites will be due compensation for the youngster if they offer him a new deal on equal or greater terms to his current one, they have only themselves to blame for the current situation of the rising star.

The youngster may have made his breakthrough at Leeds only this season, but the 20-year-old has been on the books of the Whites since 2014, and surely they could have sorted his contract situation months earlier.

True, it takes time to hammer out a contract and Leeds would have also needed to judge how good Pearce is and can be, but it should not have come to this when the 20-year-old left-back’s deal is about to run out.

With (reported) interest from Premier League clubs, it could be hard for Leeds to convince Pearce to remain at Elland Road next season.
