Leeds are loaning out young Mallik Wilks… will a striker replace him?
Leeds United fans have been crying out all transfer window for a new striker – and their pleas have yet to be responded to.
But just perhaps, the wheels are in motion for a new addition before the transfer window closes.
Leeds recalled young striker Mallik Wilks earlier this month after a relatively impressive loan spell for League Two side Accrington Stanley.
The first team football did him good, and he was expected to compete for a first team spot.
Instead he appears to have been snubbed, and is set to be sent back out on loan, with the Yorkshire Evening Post reporting Grimsby will win the race.
Leeds have limited options up front, with loanee Pierre-Michel Lasogga inconsistent, and Kemar Roofe also not wholly convincing as a central striker.
Caleb Ekuban is of course waiting in the wings – but from the treatment room – as he has done for most of the season.
Jay-Roy Grot has been demoted to the under-23s, and Wilks could have been a very useful option, full of confidence after his spell on loan.
It all appears to be set up for Leeds to invest over the final few days of the transfer window and sign a new goalscorer.
Loaning Wilks should be taken as a confident sign by the club that they are hopeful of bringing in a new face, rather than keeping him and trying to make do.
