Leeds United were beaten 2-0 by Newcastle United earlier today.

Robert Green has apologised to Leeds United fans on Twitter, after his error proved costly against Newcastle United.

Green dropped a tame shot from Jack Colback right on to the foot of Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle, who could not miss from close range.

Gayle’s goal gave Newcastle the lead in the match, and Rafael Benitez’s side never looked back after that.

Newcastle always seemed in control of the contest, with Gayle adding a second to ensure that they took the three points from Elland Road.

With Newcastle in such good form, Leeds could ill afford to gift them a goal, and Green appeared to realise the magnitude of his mistake after the contest.

Newcastle have now won their last nine games in all competitions to establish a five point lead at the top of the Championship table.

Leeds, meanwhile, have slipped down to seventh in the second tier standings – but they remain in good form.

Leeds have won nine of their last 13 matches, and still remain within touching distance of the play off places.

Garry Monk’s side’s next match comes against Rotherham United at the New York Stadium on Saturday.
