Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino has admitted that he is searching for the right project amid links with a move to Leeds United.

Martino has become a surprise candidate for the Leeds job this week.

TNT Sports in Argentina report that Leeds have approached Martino to gauge his interest in a move to Elland Road.

The report stated that Martino would prefer to take a job in the summer rather than in the middle of the season.

Martino hasn’t fully closed the door on Leeds though and this reported interest is fascinating.

Martino played under Leeds icon Marcelo Bielsa for Newell’s Old Boys and the pair have maintained a strong bond over the years.

That history with Bielsa may well have attracted Leeds to Martino, who is out of work after a spell in charge of the Mexico national team.

Gerardo Martino searching for next club amid Leeds United interest

If Leeds really are chasing Martino then his latest comments will be of interest to the Whites hierarchy.

Martino has been speaking to Somos Versus back in Paraguay having managed the Paraguayan national team between 2007 and 2011 as well as managing Paraguayan sides Libertad and Cerro Porteno.

Martino was asked about managing in Paraguay again but the 60-year-old admitted that he has no idea right now.

The Argentinian added that he had a plan an idea throughout his career but right now, he doesn’t have anything in mind.

Martino noted that he is looking for a new project right now and wouldn’t just take any job – it has to be the right one.

“I have no idea,” said Martino. “I always had an idea throughout my career and today I am without it. I look more for projects, for circumstances, for family, I would not just go anywhere,” he added.

Leeds now seem to be looking for a manager to take over until the summer, when targets like Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola may be available.

A brief spell in England doesn’t sound like the project Martino is speaking of here and it may well be that he is just another name to fall by the wayside for Leeds.
