Leeds United thumped Preston on Boxing Day, but there was concern too.

Leeds United boss Garry Monk has told TV Yorkshire that Kyle Bartley and Charlie Taylor could be fit for Wednesday’s tricky visit to Aston Villa.

The Whites thumped Preston North End 4-1 at Deepdale on Boxing Day, with Kemar Roofe, Hadi Sacko, Souleymane Doukara and Pablo Hernandez doing the damage.

It was a fantastic victory which consolidated the feel-good factor regarding Leeds’ promotion bid but there was a bit of concern in the form of two defenders.

Bartley suffered a head injury when ex-Whites hero Jermaine Beckford kicked out at him, resulting in a red card, while left-back Taylor was a noticeable omission from the matchday squad.

United visit Aston Villa on Wednesday, though, and Monk says both should be okay for the trip to Villa Park.

“It was a clash of heads and he’s a little bit groggy, but he’s a proper centre-half now. He got a bit of oxegen on the pitch, but no he’ll be fine,” he told TV Yorkshire.

Asked if Taylor will be alright for Aston Villa, Monk added: “Yeah we’re very hopeful. It’s just a little bit of a sore achilles, but we’ll have a look at him over the next few days.

It goes to show how strong Leeds’ squad is when Monk’s side can pull out victories like that without Taylor and striker Chris Wood, who also missed out.
