Victor Sanchez won the Champions League with Real Madrid but Leeds United should not let this distract from a strange managerial career.

If Leeds United fans were looking forward to a new dawn after Andrea Radrizzani rode in to bring an end to Massimo Cellino’s tumultuous reign at Elland Road, the last few weeks have provided a heavy dose of harsh reality.

As if the sudden resignation of Garry Monk, who guided Leeds to their best league finish in a decade, wasn’t concerning enough, the names tipped to replace him at the Yorkshire giants will hardly get supporters rushing to the ticket office.

According to Sky Bet, Spaniard Victor Sanchez is now the 7/4 favourite to be appointed at Elland Road, ahead of Alan Pardew, Quique Sanchez Flores and Monk’s long-serving assistant boss Pep Clotet.

A former Real Madrid midfielder and Spanish international who won the Champions League and La Liga double in 1998, it’s fair to say Sanchez career in the dugout has proven to be rather less successful.

Alarm bells

The 41-year-old was sacked at his latest club, Real Betis, after a run of six defeats in eight left them on the verge of the relegation zone. He also suffered the same fate in 2016 as manager of Deportivo.

Strangely enough, Victor had started impressively at both clubs but his high-intensity approach and attractive, attacking style soon gave way to an irreparable slump.

However, his managerial career is perhaps most commonly recognised for a short-term stay at Olympiakos last season. And when we say short-term, we mean short-term.

Appointed on June 23rd by current Nottingham Forest chairman Evangelos Marinakis, Victor Sanchez lasted less just two months, and two games, at the helm.

A 1-0 aggregate defeat to Hapoel Be’er Sheva in Champions League qualifying was enough for Olympiakos to wield the axe.

Has anyone got Garry Monk’s phone number?
