Leeds United fans want Alex McCarthy to rejoin the club in January.
Felix Wiedwald’s error in Leeds United’s 3-1 win at QPR on Saturday has reignited the debate about Thomas Christiansen’s goalkeeping problems.
The 27-year-old came under fire for horrendously misjudging the flight of the ball and allowed it to bounce over his head and into the net to bring the score back to 2-1 at Loftus Road.
This is Wiedwald’s second stint as Leeds’ first-choice goalkeeper already this season after Christiansen previously dropped him for Andy Lonergan, who evidently didn’t do enough to keep the shirt during his stint in the side.
His error in the capital, however, was yet another reminder that United could probably do with a goalkeeper in January – and fans of the Elland Road club have someone in mind.
Alex McCarthy impressed during a loan spell in West Yorkshire in the 2011-12 campaign, making six appearances, but he hasn’t played a single Premier League game for Southampton since joining from Crystal Palace 18 months ago.
And United fans seem open to the idea of getting him back for another spell come January.
It seems distinctly possible that McCarthy would be open to leaving the Saints. After all, precious years of his career are going to waste by watching Fraser Forster between the sticks every week.
That’s not to say that he would jump at the chance to rejoin Leeds, but the Whites’ exciting project, coupled with the fans’ positive perception of him, would surely be enough to make him ask the question at the very least and perhaps Director of Football Victor Orta should enquire next month.
Christiansen and his defenders need a goalkeeper that they can rely on and, sadly, it’s growing increasingly obvious that Wiedwald and Lonergan don’t fit the bill.
