At 17, Harrison Male is already starting for Leeds’ under-23 team.
Leeds United’s goalkeeping situation is a bit of a mess at present, with both summer signings Felix Wiedwald and Andy Lonergan producing critical mistakes so far.
Former England international Robert Green was needlessly sold, and the club are trying to untangle the mess they have created.
Long term though the future looks bright, with some young talented goalkeepers coming through Leeds’ youth system.
Bailey Peacock-Farrell is third in line for a first team opportunity and has already made his debut back in 2016, and Will Huffer, 19, has previously represented England at under-18 level.
Now there is a new name making his way into the mix, 17-year-old Harrison Male.
Male, signed terms with Leeds last summer, signing a two-year scholarship with the club. He was 16 at the time, turning 17 this past September.
Already he has made the step up from the under-18s, and started for the under-23 team at the City Ground in a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest last Friday, displacing Huffer.
Male has already been recognised at international level, featuring for England when he was an under-16.
He starred for the Three Lions in a tournament win over USA, helping to win the penalty shootout, in front of current England boss Gareth Southgate, the Bridlington Free Press reported at the time.
He has been with Leeds United since he was just six years old, and he is gradually progressing closer to the first team.
Getting into the under-23 team is a big step, and while it is too early for Leeds to expect him to help their ongoing goalkeeping dilemma, there is legitimate hope that the ‘next big thing’ is already in the club’s ranks.
