Sheffield United maintained their pressure on Leeds United earlier on Saturday, as the Blades got the better of Nottingham Forest 2-0 at home in the Championship.

The win took the Blades level on points with Leeds, who needed a draw to go back into the second and final automatic spot in the Championship table.

With Wigan Athletic fighting for survival in the second tier of English football and in real danger of getting relegated to League One at the end of the season, Marcelo Bielsa’s side were expected to win with ease against the Latics, especially as the match was at home.

Things started well for Leeds, as Wigan were reduced to 10 men as early as the 14th minute when Cedric Kipre was sent off.

Patrick Bamford put the West Yorkshire outfit in the lead just three minutes later, and at that stage, it did look that the Whites were going to stroll to an easy win.

However, Wigan restored parity through Gavin Massey on the stroke of half time, and he made it 2-1 to the Latics on 62 minutes.

The scoreline stayed that way for the rest of the match, although it could have been much different had Pablo Hernandez not failed to convert the spot kick following Kipre’s dismissal.

Many Leeds players struggled to play to the best of their abilities against Wigan, and one of them was Ezgjan Alioski.

The 27-year-old, who can operate as a winger or as a left-back, started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes, and the Macedonia international’s performance left much to be desire.

According to WhoScored, Alioski took four shots of which one was on target, played six key passes, had a pass accuracy of 83.9%, won two headers, took 94 touches, and made two tackles and four clearances.

Leeds fans were not impressed with the display produced by Alioski and have criticised him on Twitter.
