Leeds United’s unbeaten run in the Championship ended at four games, as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Newcastle United at Elland Road this afternoon.

The Whites had won each of their last three league games, and fans went into today’s with Newcastle feeling confident that they could throw a spanner in the works, given that Newcastle had won seven Championship games in a row.

However, Garry Monk’s men ultimately came up a little short as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat, with Dwight Gayle profiting from a terrible Robert Green error, as the Leeds goalkeeper fumbled Jack Colback’s wayward cross on the goal line, allowing Gayle to grab the opener.

Newcastle made it 2-0 after the break, as intricate passing opened up the Leeds defence and allowed Vurnon Anita to cross for Gayle to slide home the second and killer goal.

Leeds will be disappointed with their performance, and whilst Green will take much of the blame for his quite unbelievable mistake, other players struggled on the day too.

Midfielder Kalvin Phillips was thrust into an unfamiliar No. 10 role this afternoon as Pablo Hernandez was ruled out through injury, but the young midfielder struggled to make an impact today.

Phillips failed to impose himself on the game as Jonjo Shelvey and Jack Colback ran the show in Newcastle’s midfield, whilst his delivery from corners was disappointing throughout.

After the final whistle, fans took to Twitter to criticise Phillips’ display, suggesting that he was a weak link in the Leeds side, with many left bemused by the 20-year-old’s corner taking ability.

Others moved to defend Phillips, suggesting that he was asked to play in an unfamiliar role against Newcastle, and he still has plenty of potential to fulfil at Elland Road despite today’s performance.
