Subsequently reports have surfaced suggesting Leeds are negotiating for Mbakogu with Carpi.
Gianluca Di Marzio claims Leeds have a ‘general agreement’ for the striker worth £3 million.
Time is running out for Leeds to conclude a deal, with the transfer deadline just two days away.
The report suggests that Carpi could still push to try and get Mbakogu loaned back until the summer, which would not help Leeds’ current situation and simply make him a summer replacement for Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
Nigerian forward Mbakogu is unproven in English football and is only playing in Italy’s Serie B.
The 25-year-old currently has seven goals in 20 games this season.
A move would be a gamble for Leeds although at this stage there is a very real danger they end up signing no striker.
Mbakogu would be a worthy addition to their options, but getting him now instead of in the summer has to be a must for the Whites if they do move.
