Jay-Roy Grot’s spell at Leeds United has been poor so far and a demotion to the under-23s was long overdue.
While the rest of the first team headed out to Spain for a winter training camp, Grot remained in Yorkshire to make his first start for the under-23s.
Lining up against Huddersfield, Grot grew into the game and made an impact.
He first won a penalty, which teammate Oliver Sarkic took and missed, and then went onto break the deadlock from close range.
The young Dutchman was the subject of criticism from fans after the defeat to Newport, and he has looked lost during his cameo appearances in the Championship.
Grot, 19, desperately needs confidence and a goal for the under-23s will help him rebuild it.
It is only a small step forward but Grot did all that was asked of him last night and the decision to send him to the under-23s appears to be a smart one.
