Norwich City midfielder Jonny Howson was tipped to return to Leeds United this summer.

Most Leeds United supporters would welcome Jonny Howson back at Elland Road with open arms. A boyhood, locally-born fanatic, the club’s youngest captain since the legendary Billy Bremner, the dynamic midfielder is a modern-day club favourite.

And with Norwich City ready to let him go this summer as part of their squad overhaul, many Leeds fans would jump at the chance to bring the boy home.

But not for £5 million. The Mirror claim that is how much Leeds will need to pay to re-sign their former skipper this summer.

Yet, although Howson would be a popular addition and an excellent way for new owner Andrea Radrizzani to get a sceptical fanbase on side, Leeds could do a lot more with £5 million than add yet another central midfielder to an already lopsided squad.

Leeds are crying out for reinforcements at left-back with Charlie Taylor’s contract expiring. A new centre-half is also must after Kyle Bartley’s loan spell from Swansea City ended.

They could do with options on the wing while the 2016/17 Championship top scorer Chris Wood is crying out for a fellow striker to share the goalscoring burden.

Howson, then, is far from a necessity. As painful as it is for Leeds fans to admit, the club would be better served taking their interest elsewhere.
