Leeds United earned an excellent 1-0 win over Sheffield United’s Under-23 side at Thorp Arch on Monday afternoon to remain top of the Professional Development League – and fans were impressed by Alfie McCalmont’s performance.

Sitting at the base of the Leeds midfield, 18-year-old McCalmont captained the Whites reserve side as Izzy Brown’s first-half goal was enough to secure all three points.

The likes of Aapo Halme, Barry Douglas, Brown, Tyler Roberts, TomPearce and Jamie Shackleton all featured as Carlos Corberan’s side maintained their excellent 2018-19 campaign.

But it was McCalmont that was the pick of the Under-23 players, as the Northern Ireland Under-19 international dictated the tempo of play at the base of the midfield. His array of passing was superb throughout, feeding the likes of Brown.

It has been a good month for the midfielder, after he signed a new contract last week that will see him remain at Elland Road until the summer of 2021.

Leeds fans took to Twitter to deliver their verdict on the youngster’s performance at Thorp Arch against the Blades, and the majority were thoroughly impressed. One fan reckons McCalmont will be the next to come through the academy.
