Liverpool have kicked off the transfer window with a huge move for Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk, agreeing to pay £75 million for the centre-back.

This is a transfer which could have a big knock-on effect, with Southampton now flush with cash to invest in their own side, and a replacement needed.

One player who was linked in the summer was Leeds United’s Pontus Jansson, with SkySports reporting the Swede was a top target for the Saints.

Pontus Jansson of Leeds United looks on during the Sky Bet Championship match between Barnsley and Leeds United at Oakwell Stadium on November 25, 2017 in Barnsley, England.

Van Dijk’s move has left Leeds fans concerned Southampton could renew their interest in their star centre-back, and unsettle their promotion bid.

Jansson is a key part of Leeds’ team, and a departure would leave the Whites with big shoes to fill.

In their favour is the fact Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani handed Janssona contract extension just two months ago, showing faith in the defender during a rocky patch of form

He has since bounced back to his best and has helped inspire Leeds to fifth place in the table, with four wins in a row.

Leeds did cave in and sell Chris Wood in the summer, but there is no urgency to sell Jansson unless he pushes for a move.

The defender has such a positive relationship with the fanbase that surely he wouldn’t ruin it by requesting an untimely mid-season exit?
