It’s fair to say not many of Leeds United’s summer signings were household names around West Yorkshire.

And you can imagine that Ard van Peppen’s Wikipedia page suddenly got a lot more popular when Roda JC Live linked the experienced left-back with a shock move to Elland Road over the summer.

At the time, Leeds were looking for a natural replacement for Burnley-bound Charlie Taylor and Van Peppen, a 32-year-old defender who had spent most of his career bouncing around the lower reaches of the Eredivisie, had emerged as a potential target.

Not that the fans were particularly impressed. After all, they made it clear on Twitter that they had no intention of welcoming the Dutchman to Elland Road.

In the end, the links came to nothing and Van Peppen stayed with Roda. And even though Leeds have still not found a replacement for Taylor, trialling a number of players on the left of defence with mixed results, Van Peppen has done little this season to suggest the supporters should have not have written him off straight away.

After surviving via the relegation play-off last season, Roda need a miracle again this. The Kerkrade-based club, managed by former Leeds defender Robert Molenaar, are bottom of the Eredivisie with three wins in 17 games all season.

In total, they’ve picked up 11 points in that time and Van Peppen has started on just eight occasions. It’s difficult to imagine, then, that he would have been the solution to Leeds’ left-back problem.
