Huddersfield Town secured their place in the Premier League at the weekend, beating Reading on penalties after what was perhaps the most boring 120 minutes of football in Championship play-off final history.
But for much of the season it was another West Yorkshire side that felt they were on their way to the top-flight.
Leeds’ Kemar Roofe reacts after hitting the post
Leeds United seemed to be cruising toward a play-off spot, before a late season dip saw Fulham leapfrog them into the top six.
Leeds’ failure to make the play-offs was a major disappointment to the club, but they are not the only team who wanted them up.
Oxford United manager Michael Appleton
Oxford United boss Michael Appleton has confirmed this week that his club have missed out on a £500,000 bonus from a Kemar Roofe promotion, telling the Witney Gazette:
“We would have had a little windfall through the Roofe deal if they had got promoted, but I think it lasts for the length of his first contract.”
Oxford’s Kemar Roofe celebrates scoring their third goal
Leeds signed Roofe from Oxford after the attacker scored 26 goals in 48 games for the U’s in League Two. The player has had an up-and-down campaign at Elland Road, scoring just three goals in 49 appearances for the club.
At 24-years-old he is still a top talent for the club and Leeds fans will hope they are paying Oxford half a million quid in 12 months time, with Roofe playing a vital role.
