Leeds United have missed out on signing Dion Lopy with the Reims midfielder completing a move to Spanish side Almeria.

Dion Lopy was emerging as a target for Leeds United but he has secured a move to Spanish side Almeria instead.

The Daily Mail claim that Leeds were exploring a deal to bring Lopy to Elland Road this summer.

The Whites have already landed one new midfielder with Ethan Ampadu arriving from Chelsea.

Yet with the Blues now wanting to sign Tyler Adams, Leeds are having to explore other midfield targets.

Rangers ace Glen Kamara continues to be linked but it’s suggested that Lopy was wanted at Leeds.

Leeds explored a deal to bring Lopy from Stade de Reims to Elland Road having been impressed with him in Ligue 1.

However, Spanish side Almeria have now confirmed the signing of Lopy in a deal believed to be worth around €10million (£8.6million).

That is made up of €8million (£6.9million) in guaranteed money and €2million (£1.7million) in add-ons.

Leeds may well have felt that this was a little too expensive but Lopy can be crossed off the transfer wish list.

Who is Leeds United target Dion Lopy?

Lopy was born in Senegal and came up in the Oslo Football Academy.

That may sound like it’s based in Norway but it’s actually in Senegal, in the capital city of Dakar to be specific.

Lopy featured at the 2019 Under-20 World Cup and that sparked a move to Reims, who pounced to sign Lopy in 2020.

After initially starting in the Reims II team, Lopy became a first-team regular in the 2021-22 season and hasn’t looked back.

Primarily a holding midfielder, Lopy has become a key man under William Still and has been linked with other Premier League moves.

The Daily Mail reported in April that Everton and Aston Villa were both chasing Lopy’s signature.

Leeds had joined the race but will now have to target somebody else with Lopy completing his move to Spain.
