Leeds United have sold youngster Oriol Rey to Real Valladolid, the club confirmed
Rey had not been involved in any of Leeds’ pre-season friendlies after his return from his loan spell.
Leeds impressed fans when they signed Rey in 2017 from Barcelona.
His first season for the under-23s went well, starring in both midfield and defence. After a loan at Spanish second division side Conquense, it was unclear what his future may hold.
Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has evidently cleared Rey’s sale, but it could be one the Whites’ regret, having failed to give Rey a proper chance.
For a start, the fact he has been signed by a La Liga side is telling.
He has been given a three-year deal, showing Valladolid believe in his talent.
Rey is a versatile player with strong passing and technical ability. It is a shame he hasn’t had a real chance to shine at Leeds.
At just 21, Rey can still improve. It’s a shame Leeds aren’t back him to do so with them, and if he starts excelling in La Liga, the Whites could quickly end up looking silly.
His value will soar, and he could be worth millions. Leeds might have just given away a valuable asset.
