Mallik Wilks joined Accrington Stanley on loan from Leeds United until January.
Mallik Wilks is one of the most talented and promising young forwards on the books of Leeds United at the moment.
Currently on loan at Accrington Stanley in League Two until January, the 18-year-old forward’s comments earlier this month underline just how he is maturing and developing at the Wham Stadium.
“You realise how important every point is, how important winning is,” Wilks told Stanley’s official website earlier this month. “When you play in the Under 23s it doesn’t matter whether you win or lose, it’s how you play.
“When you play in League Two, every point in vital. When you come on in the last 10 minutes and you are 1-0 down, you know you have to do everything to score.”
Wilks’s comments justify Leeds’s decision to send the youngster on loan to Accrington.
True, the quality of football in League Two is not as good as that in the Championship, but it is still professional football with points at stake.
Playing for the Leeds youth teams would not have helped the youngster mature and progress, but fighting for points against professional footballers week in and week out in a respectable division is going to prepare him for what’s to come at Leeds.
Although it will not be wise to expect the youngster to break into the Leeds first team as soon as he returns from his loan, head coach Thomas Christiansen will know that he can rely upon him if needed.
