Leeds United’s Under-23 coach Jason Blunt has singled out youngster Frank Mulhern for praise following his latest youth outing, after speaking to LUTV.

The Whites were held to a 1-1 draw by Charlton Atheltic’s Under-23 side at Thorp Arch on Monday afternoon.

Mulhern looked set to be the hero after his 83rd-minute strike, but Blunt’s side conceded late on as the Addicks left Yorkshire with a share of the points.

Nevertheless, it was the 19-year-old’s third goal in as many games for Leeds’ Under-23 outfit, and Blunt has claimed that the teenager has come on leaps and bounds since last term.

“It’s a great finish from Frank and to be fair to him, he has improved I would say 100% since he’s come in for pre-season,” he told LUTV.

“He’s looking more athletic and powerful, and he’s a talented boy who obviously he knows where the back of the net is.”

Mulhern is certainly doing his chances of a senior call-up no harm at all, but it may be a while coming and it’s more a reflection of the circumstances rather than his ability.

Leeds boss Garry Monk is not in a position to experiment at the moment. The 38-year-old has won one Championship game in six, and another defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers tonight would plunge his future at Elland Road into major doubt.

Blackburn are bottom of the Championship, but a win tonight, coupled with Preston avoiding defeat versus Cardiff, would see Leeds slip to last place.
