Leeds United talent Alex Purver appears set to leave the club.

Purver signed a one-year contract extension last June and featured in pre-season for Garry Monk’s side.

He did not make the step up to the first team and has spent parts of the season out on loan at non-league Guiseley, in two different spells.

Leeds coach and head of performance Sam Rush sent a message out on Twitter yesterday paying tribute to the 21-year-old and wishing him well for the future.

The message was ‘liked’ by former Leeds talents Robbie McDaid and Eric Grimes, as well as youth teamer Romario Vieira.

There is no official comment from Leeds regarding Purver, although his departure is not surprising.

He is on the fringes of the squad but Leeds are an ambitious team with high aspirations next season, and incoming signings will make it even more difficult for Purver to break through.

It is best for him at this stage now he is 21 to cut him loose and allow him to find his own route in the professional game rather than give him false hope and keep him in the under-23s another season.

Now it will be up to Purver to show Leeds they have made a mistake.
