‘Watch this space’: Australian reporter claims he’s heard Leeds will land Ange Postecoglou this summer

Leeds United are being backed to appoint Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou at the end of the season – at least according to claims in Australia.

The Whites sacked Jesse Marsch over two weeks ago now and still haven’t managed to find a replacement.

There are now some intriguing claims emerging about a possible move for Celtic boss Postecoglou.

Australian reporter Andy Maher – a long-standing TV and radio host Down Under – suggests Postecoglou to Leeds is on the cards.

Maher has told SEN’s The Run Home that a source in Australian football is adamant that Postecoglou is leaving Celtic for the Premier League this summer.

Maher claims that Postecoglou’s next destination will ‘most likely’ be Leeds and his mystery source is suggesting ‘it’s going to happen’.

That would depend on Leeds staying in the Premier League though, so any move would only materialise at the end of the season.

“I’ve got a snout who’s quite hooked into Australian soccer. He’s given me a steer here and there and on enough occasions he’s been right,” said Maher, as quoted by FOX Sports. “Gives me a call this morning adamant that this will be Ange Postecoglou’s last year at Celtic, and he will be leaving at the end of the year. And that he will be, it depends on survival in the Premier League, he will be taking one of two positions.”

“But predominantly and most likely it will be the position at Leeds. Peter Lowy, son of Frank, bought into Leeds (in late 2021). One of his assistant coaches at Celtic is Harry Kewell, of course a celebrated Leeds player. Huge club, massive upside, struggling to hold onto their position in the Premier League. The temptation of being the manager to restore Leeds to Champions League-type contention and top-four, top-six status in the Premier League would be appealing to anyone. This snout is telling me, watch this space, at the end of the season – it’s going to happen,” he added.

Does Ange Postecoglou to Leeds United have legs?

We can certainly understand why Leeds would want Postecoglou.

The 57-year-old has worked wonders at Celtic since leaving Yokohama F. Marinos for Parkhead in 2021.

Not only are Celtic on course for a second league title in a row under Postecoglou but the style of play has been exceptional to watch.

There are aspects of Postecoglou’s football that may leave some fans remembering Marcelo Bielsa, so Leeds being interested adds up.

A move to Elland Road doesn’t feel like a nailed-on thing though.

Firstly, whilst Kewell does have history with Leeds, he’s hardly the most popular figure amongst fans after a controversial move to Galatasaray.

Then you move on to Postecoglou’s own position. He has a great thing going at Celtic and he would surely only leave for an absolutely perfect job.

Leeds just doesn’t seem like that, even if they do stay in the Premier League for next season.

Yes, they’re a big club with a huge fanbase and an incredible history but so are Celtic – and he can manage in the Champions League with the Bhoys.

Postecoglou – hailed as ‘magnificent’ by John Hartson– has stayed with Celtic throughout interest from a number of English clubs and we’re backing him to stay at Celtic until a top six Premier League club come calling.
