Ipswich Town remain indebted to Leicester City loanee Tom Lawrence – but could Leeds United lure him to Elland Road?

Tom Lawrence of Ipswich Town scores their first goal

After missing out on the play-offs in heart-breaking fashion with just one game to go in the Championship season, Leeds United will know that the best way to sate the fans’ disappointment is to get a marquee signing through the door as quickly as possible.

And broking a deal for Tom Lawrence could surely dispel some of the clouds hanging over Elland Road, as reported by The Chronicle.

Ipswich Town’s Player of the Year after a sublime loan spell from Leicester City, manager Mick McCarthy made it clear that his Tractor Boys would be mired up a certain creek without a paddle if they couldn’t rely on Lawrence’s frequent flashes of inspiration.

The 23-year-old, a former Manchester United youth prospect, has netted nine largely spectacular goals this season from thrilling individual strikers to long-range blockbusters. Add to that another nine assists and it’s clear that Lawrence is a man who could add much-needed cutting edge to an often blunt Leeds attack.

The Chronicle reported in January that The Whites were interested and, four months later, their springtime collapse and the rapid decline of playmaker Pablo Hernandez only reinforces the opinion that Lawrence could take Leeds to the next level.

Leeds' Pablo Hernandez dejected

Understandably, after such an eye-catching season, Leeds are not the only club sniffing around the Leicester whizzkid. The Daily Mail report that Newcastle United are also interested with manager Rafael Benitez aiming to add more of a goal threat to his midfield.

In fact, no midfielder in The Magpies squad, barring Matt Ritchie, can match Lawrence for attacking output.

Although with the awestruck McCarthy claiming that the four-time Welsh international has his heart set on a move to the Premier League, per the Green’Un, newly promoted Newcastle appears a more likely destination than Elland Road.

Therefore, this is a great opportunity for new owner Andrea Radrizzani to make a much needed statement of intent after an ineffective January window dashed Leeds’ promotion hopes.
