Leeds United forward Jay Roy Grot is out on loan.
Jay-Roy Grot is rebuilding his confidence after a disastrous first season at Leeds United.
His move to Leeds from the Eredivisie was a gamble which did not pay off and he scored only one goal.
He is currently out on loan in Holland, featuring for VVV Venlo.
Grot is scheduled to return at the end of the season, but Leeds should hesitate to bring him back to the first team.
Instead they should be looking to send him out on loan again, whichever division they are in.
Grot is performing steadily for Venlo, often utilised out on the wing. He has scored two goals in 11 games, of which eight have been starts.
This is not the prolific form Leeds want to see from the 20-year-old which would see them make Grot an immediate first team player.
As it stands now, if Grot were to be reintroduced to Leeds, he would go back to playing a bit-part role off the bench, and would be immediately under pressure just like he was in his first season.
His call up into the Dutch under-21 international side is not as impressive as it sounds. He was already with the under-19s and has simply moved up because he has outgrown this age group. Holland of course did not even qualify for the World Cup, and are not blessed with options.
Grot would struggle to break through at Leeds this season and even next season due to the club’s investment in bigger transfers, with Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts joining for a combined £11 million in 2018.
Leeds are committed to making them work and for the next year to 18 months at least, they will remain strongly in the mix for opportunities.
Grot needs to go out on loan in 2019/20, to continue to improve further, and be an extra year removed from his confidence draining 17/18 season.
If he returns next year he ends up be back in the same position. By deferring his return for a year, by sending him back to Venlo or elsewhere, Leeds would be acting in Grot’s best interests.
