Sunderland are said to be close to sealing a deal for the Leeds United goalkeeper.
Leeds United head coach Thomas Christiansen has refused to rule out the possibility of Andy Lonergan leaving Elland Road this week, amid speculation linking him with a move to Sunderland.
Those reports have yet to subside, with the Shields Gazette claiming as recently as Monday afternoon that Sunderland are ‘understood to be close to sealing a deal’ for the Leeds goalkeeper.
Lonergan only moved to Leeds last summer from Wolverhampton Wanderers – his second spell with the Whites.
Despite a run of seven games as Christiansen’s number one throughout October and November, however, the 34-year-old has only appeared once since then, and a chance to play regular football at the Stadium of Light is likely to appeal.
Asked if Lonergan will be still a Leeds come Wednesday’s 11pm deadline, the Dane told Radio Yorkshire: “Yes he will train with the team today and be in the squad for tomorrow [against Hull City].”
On whether or not he expects the Lancastrian to stay, Christiansen added: “We will see, we will see.”
It is unlikely that Leeds would allow Lonergan to leave without recruiting an experienced alternative, although Christiansen could look to promote one of Bailey Peacock-Farrell, Will Huffer, Harrison Male or Kamil Miazek to the position of Felix Wiedwald’s understudy.
