Should Leeds United head coach revisit interest in Luc Castaignos?
Leeds United are on the lookout for a new striker in January to provide competition for Chris Wood, and the answer could lie in a player Garry Monk has looked at previously.
The Mail reported in 2015 that Monk was attempting to sign former Inter Milan striker Luc Castaignos, who was playing for Dutch side FC Twente at the time.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s Luc Castaignos
Castaignos was valued at £4 million, The Mail reported, but Swansea were unable to complete a deal, with the striker heading to Eintracht Frankfurt instead.
A tough season saw him sold to Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, and already it appears Castaignos is in need of a move.
He has no goals in 11 appearances to far, and Leeds may be in with a chance of signing the Dutchman on loan.
They have already done one deal with Sporting this season, bringing Hadi Sacko in on a season long loan agreement.
Luc Castaignos at Inter Milan
Castaignos, 24, was a sensation in the youth ranks for Holland, scoring 27 goals at international youth level, but has not gone on to win a senior call-up.
He has scored prolifically in Holland, but struggled outside the Eredivisie. He netted 15 times for Feyenoord as a teenager, and 42 goals across three seasons for Twente.
Spells in Portugal, Germany, and Italy have done little for the striker, but dropping down to England’s second tier could be the right move for the pacy forward, who was once coveted by top sides across Europe.
Alternatives for Leeds could mean going after a striker more proven in English football, but if Castaignos is available on a loan deal, Monk would be smart to re-consider his interest.
