Marcelo Bielsa has admitted to Leeds Live that he made a mistake during Leeds United’s match against Birmingham City last weekend.

Leeds were beaten for the first time in Championship action at Elland Road in their most recent match.

The Whites lost 2-1 to Birmingham, and never really got going in the match.

Leeds looked all at sea in the first-half, and Bielsa has taken the blame for his side’s struggles, due to his decision to play Phillips in a deep role.

“I decided to build the line of three with Phillips, making him do movements forward and backwards,” Bielsa said. “Two possibilities of being in front of Cooper and Jansson or behind.

“With this system I could keep all of the good things from the Preston game. Samu and Klich attacked well from the centre to the sides and Phillips started the game well as a four. I wanted to keep all of these positive features of the team.

“When we didn’t have the ball I wanted to build with a line of three and with the ball a four, but it didn’t work. This was a mistake. I thought it would work, but it didn’t. That’s why the players are not responsible and I will try not to make any mistakes.”

Phillips was actually taken off before half-time for the second time this season, with Leeds 2-0 down, but by that time the damage had been done.

Leeds have still made a highly impressive start to the new campaign though, and they sit at the top of the Championship table.

Bielsa’s men are next in action on Friday evening, when they take on Sheffield Wednesday, and they will be looking to bounce back from defeat with a victory at Hillsborough.
