Leeds United boss Garry Monk has been commenting on how important playing in tough games like the one against Barnsley today is for talented players in the squad such as Kalvin Phillips.

Leeds United’s good recent form continued today with a 2-1 win against Yorkshire rivals Barnsley.

It was a good performance all round from the Leeds players, with goals from Kyle Bartley and Pablo Hernandez proving enough for the win.

One performance that did stand out was that of midfielder Phillips. The local lad has become a regular first-team member under Monk and put in a great display yet again today with some tough tackles and a swashbuckling display.

Speaking about the display of his young midfield maestro, Monk had this to say to TV Yorkshire:

“It’s important for these young players to get experience. Today would have been a tremendous experience for him, and the other young players on the pitch.

“I talked about this young group working very hard and bringing their potential out. We’re improving all the time, you can see with the group.”

Phillips, along with Ronaldo Vieira, is keeping the likes of Luke Murphy and Toumani Diagouraga out of first-team contention at the Championship club.

The 20-year-old stepped in for captain Liam Bridcutt with aplomb yet again today and Leeds fans will be hoping that the dynamic midfield operator can continue his progression for the next few years.
