Will Leeds United regret sanctioning a move so early?

Jack Clarke of Leeds United

Leeds United confirmed the sale of Jack Clarke this morning to Tottenham Hotspur.

Clarke re-signs for Leeds on loan, before heading to Spurs in 2020/21.

The Guardian report Tottenham will pay £10 million rising to £11.5 million.

This is far less than the £20 million The Mail reported that Leeds wanted for Clarke originally.

Getting Clarke on loan for the year is obviously a positive for Leeds, and for Clarke.

Strong performances could justify Leeds’ early valuation of Clarke.

Leeds obviously backed down, needing the money now to strengthen their team. Some would say that getting money plus Clarke could be a masterstroke.

If Clarke helps Leeds win promotion to the Premier League, the Whites may feel it was worth it.

But how much would he be worth in a year’s time?

Every strong performance Clarke turns in for Leeds will make £10 million seem like a snip in today’s market.

In a year’s time he could easily be worth the £20 million Leeds wanted this year.

Leeds obviously felt it was necessary to sell Clarke now, and it was worth the gamble.

But there’s a scenario where this time next year Leeds are still stuck in the Championship, and sold one of their top assets for half his value.
