Leeds United want Abdelhamid Sabiri in a move that would provide a return to West Yorkshire that nobody could have predicted.

Samp News 24 are reporting that Leeds are now showing an interest in signing Sampdoria talent Sabiri ahead of the January window.

Fiorentina, Real Betis and Lyon are also thought to be in the mix for Sabiri, who is now attracting major interest.

Sabiri, 26, has been impressing for Morocco at the World Cup and bagged an assist in the win over Belgium.

The attacking midfielder has only scored once in 11 Serie A games this season but Leeds seem to have been impressed enough.

Sampdoria want at least €10million (£8.5million) for Sabiri and Leeds paying that kind of money may raise a few eyebrows in Yorkshire.

Sabiri could make shock Yorkshire return with Leeds

Sabiri has actually had one spell in English football already.

Huddersfield Town swooped to sign Sabiri from Nurnberg back in 2017 having bagged five goals in nine league outings for the German side.

Sabiri’s time at Huddersfield was pretty miserable though as he played just seven league games in two years.

A move back to Germany with Paderborn helped Sabiri get his career on track again and is form earned him a move to Ascoli.

11 goals in 43 games sparked interest from Sampdoria and after a loan spell in the second half of last season, Sabiri’s move became permanent over the summer.

Sabiri was probably glad to see the back of West Yorkshire.

Whilst signed as a talent for the future, he was just never given much of a chance at Huddersfield under David Wagner under Jan Siewert.

Maybe they felt that Sabiri just wasn’t ready for Premier League football at that stage in his career, even if he had major potential.

Few Huddersfield fans could have ever expected to see Sabiri in the Premier League again, but that’s what may happen – and with their rivals Leeds too, in a strange twist of fate.
