Leeds United triumphantly returned to the top of the Championship table on Wednesday night with a 2-1 win over Swansea City, combined with Norwich City’s lacklustre 3-1 loss at Preston North End.
Pontus Jansson marked his 28th birthday with the opening goal at Elland Road in the 20th minute, the defender reacting first to Ezgjan Alioski’s blocked shot to rifle home on the rebound from 12 yards.
Alioski was involved again as Marcelo Bielsa’s charges doubled their advantage on 34 minutes, his cross being headed home by Jack Harrison at Erwin Mulder’s near post for a healthy half-time lead.
Swansea made it a tense finish for the Whites faithful as Luke Ayling’s foul on Joel Asoro in the box prompted the referee to award the visitors a penalty which Oliver McBurnie slotted away in the 87th minute, but Leeds held on to leapfrog Norwich into first place.
The official Twitter account of the Championship posted the updated table at the end of the day’s action, but there was one addition to the graphic which was picked up on:
Seventh-placed Derby County, a side with which Leeds haven’t exactly had the best of relations this season, have been included at the bottom.
Although one could argue it shows how narrow the gap is between sixth and seventh, it doesn’t really pertain to “things tightening up in the top six” as, well, they’re not in the top six.
