Leeds United forward Joe Gelhardt will join Sunderland on loan in the January transfer window, according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie on Twitter.

The journalist has claimed that Gelhardt will undergo a medical at Sunderland today before completing the transfer to the Championship club from Premier League outfit Leeds.

The 20-year-old England Under-20 international forward, described as “amazing” and “exciting” by Leeds teammate Brenden Aaronson on YouTube, will stay on loan at the Black Cats for the rest of the season.

Good move?

In our view, it makes sense that Joe Gelhardt is joining Sunderland on a loan deal from Leeds United.

If the 20-year-old is not going to get much playing time at Elland Road between now and the end of the season, then there is no point in the talented and promising young forward to just be part of the squad.

Sunderland are a big and ambitious club who are aiming to finish in the top six of the Championship table this season.

The Black Cats have a massive fanbase, and playing on a regular basis at the Stadium of Light will build Gelhardt’s character.

The Championship is a very tough and rigorous domestic league, and it will help the youngster in building physical resilience and in understanding the hugely competitive nature of the game.
