Valencia legend Javier Subirats has told Tribal Football that Leeds United have made a risky signing by bringing in Rodrigo.

Leeds snapped up the Spanish forward from Valencia over the summer, in what was their highest profile addition of the transfer window.

Rodrigo’s arrival at Leeds has created great excitement around Elland Road.

But Subirats thinks that the striker will only come in on a short-term option, which makes the transfer a gamble at his price.

“Ferran Torres at Manchester City is an investment with good prospects regarding future success, but perhaps buying Rodrigo carries more risks because of his age and possible tendency to get injuries in the past,” Subirats said.

“However, logically speaking, Rodrigo is a very important player. Perhaps not for 4 or 5 years… but I think he could do well for Leeds for his first couple of seasons (or so) there.

“I don’t believe that Leeds is really the best choice of club that perhaps Rodrigo would have liked to have joined.

“Regarding Rodrigo, in theory, I think he would have liked to have gone to one of the bigger clubs in Spain, which was on the cards before.”

The initial signs are that the gamble of bringing Rodrigo in will pay off for Leeds.

The 29-year-old has already opened his goalscoring account for Leeds and his last two cameo appearances have been very impressive.

Rodrigo has come off the bench to have a big impact against both Sheffield United and Manchester City, and is now pushing hard for a starting place.

Leeds are next in action on Monday against Wolves, but Rodrigo will be expected to start on the bench for that game.
