Harvey Sutcliffe has branded himself “gutted” on Instagram after the Leeds United teenager reportedly suffered an ACL injury during Monday night’s 1-0 win over Sunderland in Premier League 2 at the Stadium of Light.
The 19-year-old has been a regular in Michael Skubala’s side this season, operating on the left side of the defence. Naturally a right-back, he has excelled on the wrong side, and was superb against Sunderland – before his injury.
Indeed, it was his run into the Sunderland box that set up Italy international Willy Gnonto – who blasted an effort into the net. It was the deadline-day signing’s first goal in Leeds colours, albeit not at senior level for the Yorkshire side.
Sutcliffe was replaced by Charlie Allen on 81 minutes, with some obvious discomfort in his knee. Now, the well-respected Leeds Youth Academy Twitter page have reported that Sutcliffe has actually suffered an ACL injury.
Sutcliffe gutted after Leeds teenager suffered an ACL injury
A real blow for Sutcliffe, who had just started to play regularly in the Under-21 side under Skubala. Indeed, coming into the 2022-23 season, he had only featured 14 times for the second string – but has already played five times this season.
Leeds are lacking on the left side of defence, with Liam McCarron joining Championship side Stoke City on a permanent. Stuart McKinstry, who can also play there, has returned to boyhood club Motherwell on loan in Scotland.
Moving forward, Sutcliffe might have to be replaced by Amari Miller who again, is naturally a winger. Taking to Instagram, Sutcliffe said he was “gutted” about the injury but remains upbeat and is already focusing on his recovery.
