Leeds have kept the number nine shirt free despite Jay-Roy Grot’s addition.
Leeds United have announced the signing of Jay-Roy Grot – but left the number nine shirt vacant.
The number nine shirt was vacated by Chris Wood when he was sold to Burnley earlier this week.
Grot was handed the number 11 shirt previously worn by Souleymane Doukara, who was released earlier this week so he could make a move to Turkey.
If Leeds saw Grot as their man replacement for Wood they would have handed him the number nine, a squad number synonymous with lead goalscorers.
Grot may develop into that type of player and Leeds will hope he does, but they are not seeking to put that pressure on him at present.
Instead they appear to be saving that honour for somebody else, a player yet to be signed.
The Whites have the majority of the £15 million signed for Chris Wood available, with just £1.5 million spent on Jay-Roy Grot.
Leeds also received £1 million for Liam Bridcutt from Nottingham Forest.
The Whites have a week left before the transfer window closes and money at their disposal.
They appear certain to sign a number nine, the question simply remains as to who that will be?
