Leeds United have registered an interest in Norwich City defender Sebastien Bassong, according to The Mirror.

The 30-year-old defender would provide experience to Leeds’ backline, which kept their first clean sheet of the season against Sheffield Wednesday this past weekend.

The centre-back would potentially be a good addition to the side, but would not be guaranteed first team football due to competition for places, and his arrival could spell bad news for one of the club’s current options.

Leeds started Liam Cooper and Kyle Bartley at the weekend, with new signing Pontus Jansson getting up to speed.

The odd man out could be club captain Sol Bamba, who has been dropped by Garry Monk after his disappointing performances in losses to QPR and Birmingham.

Leeds have looked a better side without him, and he could already be fourth choice by time Jansson is ready – and down to fifth if Bassong signs.

Monk now has enough options in central defence, and the only reason to sign Bassong would be if he intends to let one go.

Sol Bamba appears the most likely candidate right now, and following HITC’s reports Monk is ready to let midfield pair Luke Murphy and Toumani Diagouraga leave, it would not be surprising to see Bamba exit too if another new face is brought in.
