Leeds should try to convince Tottenham’s Vorm to join promotion charge

Tottenham goalkeeper Michel Vorm could be on the lookout for a new club.

One of Leeds United’s problem areas this season has been their goalkeeper. Summer signing Felix Wiedwald has been far from convincing, while Andy Lonergan was guilty of two blunders against Brentford last time out.

Wiedwald, 27, was signed by the Whites in the summer from Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen, but has since conceded 12 goals in his last five games including three against Leicester City, Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff City.

It saw back-up goalkeeper Lonergan given a chance between the sticks, but he dropped a simple cross from Brentford’s Yoann Barbet before Neil Maupay gave the Bees the lead as well as allowing a free-kick from Barbet to escape his grasp.

The Whites allowed previous number one and veteran goalkeeper Rob Green to join Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield in the summer following the signing of Wiedwald, and it seems to have dramatically backfired on Thomas Christiansen.

A new goalkeeper should be the order of the day for Leeds come the January transfer window, and they would do a lot worse than attempting to convince Tottenham Hotspur’s Michel Vorm to take a step down into the Championship.

Holland international Vorm is now in the final months of his contract at Spurs, and could be considered third choice goalkeeper by Mauricio Pochettino after Paulo Gazzaniga’s excellent performance against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The 34-year-old could be allowed to leave Spurs in the winter window, as they will want to avoid losing the former Swansea goalkeeper on a free transfer in the summer.

Boasting huge Premier League experience with both Spurs and Swansea, the former FC Utrecht stopper is known for his instant reflexes and accurate distribution and would be something of a major coup if Leeds could tempt him.

There is no doubt that Vorm would be number one at Leeds, but it remains to be seen if Christiansen and director of football Victor Orta could persuade him to move to Yorkshire if the Whites do indeed try to sign him.

Adding Vorm to a side that already boasts two Dutchman in Vurnon Anita and Jay-Roy Grot, the experienced stopper could just be the missing ingredient needed to end the Whites’ 13-year long stay in the Football League.
