Should Leeds United go after Middlesbrough’s Fabio this summer?

Tom Pearce is the latest promising addition to come through Leeds United’s academy and become a regular fixture in the first-team squad.

The 20-year-old has been included in Leeds’ last six matchday squads and has started their last two Championship games.

Pearce has won rave reviews from fans for the way in which he has adapted to the big time, but it’s important to remember his age and inexperience and United’s hierarchy would be negligent if he didn’t have stellar competition for that left-back role next season.

With that in mind, the Whites absolutely should be in the market for another left-back and could Middlesbrough’s Fabio represent a viable option?

The 27-year-old is out of contract on Teeside this summer and considering he has been benched for Boro’s last three games, it seems unlikely that Tony Pulis will be extending his contract.

The Brazilian, a Premier League winner with Manchester United, would therefore be available for free and snapping him up might well represent a bargain for the Elland Road side.

Leeds also have Laurens De Bock, but the Belgian – a £1.5 million signing in January – is injured and hardly inspired confidence even before being sidelined.

Pearce might be the next big thing in West Yorkshire, but he’ll need incentive to keep improving and the addition of Fabio may well give him that hunger. Going by what we’ve seen from De Bock, he won’t.
