Leeds should reignite reported interest in Rangers left-back Declan John

Leeds are said to have wanted Rangers flyer John back in December 2017.

Steven Gerrard got his Rangers tenure off to a comfortable start with a slid 2-0 win over Macedonian outfit FK Shkupi on Thursday night, starting a handful of new signings – including Jon Flanagan.

Flanagan joined Connor Goldson, Allan McGregor, Nikola Katic, Jamie Murphy, Scott Arfield and Ovie Ejaria all appeared on the pitch during the win, with ex-Liverpool star Flanagan at left-back.

It saw Wales international Declan John drop to the bench, after being first choice for the entirety of the 2017-18 campaign. If he is to be back-up to Flanagan, the former Cardiff City man could be considering his future.

John completed a permanent move to Rangers from Cardiff in the January transfer window, but not before the Daily Express reported that Leeds were interested in a move to sign the 23-year-old.

The left-back has starred at Rangers during his short spell north of the border, scoring three goals and creating another four strikes from the left side of defence.

But if John is to be second choice, Leeds should look to reignite their interest and bring the star to Elland Road at the second attempt – eventually ending their left-back woes.

Gerrard has stated that he wants two players for every position, but Rangers do already boast Lee Wallace though doubts over his future still arise. The Gers have also been linked with Milad Mohammadi, who starred for Iran at left-back at the World Cup.

Gaetano Berardi struggled on the left side of defence last term, which convinced Leeds to sign Laurens De Bock, but he has since been ostracised by the club following an injury.

Marcelo Bielsa needs a left-back, as well as a goalkeeper and a striker at Elland Road, especially after Tyler Denton joined League One side Peterborough United on loan.

John would be the perfect addition to the Leeds squad this summer, with the left footer likely to be open to a move if he is to be made Flanagan’s understudy.
