Leeds United have been linked with a move for Italian striker Andrea Petagna.

Leeds United look compelled in the transfer market to act amid reports Kemar Roofe is in talks with Anderlecht, via Sky Sports.

Getting £7 million for a player in the final year of his contract who has suffered with injuries over the past 12 months is not the worst deal in isolation, but it leaves Leeds desperately short up front.

Only Patrick Bamford is a proven goalscorer, who didn’t hit the net in pre-season, and he too had bad luck with injury last year.

Leeds have to reinvest the money in a striker and it appears Italian forward Andrea Petagna could be a likely solution.

Tuttomercatoweb reported at the weekend that Leeds were looking at a £13.7 million move for Petagna.

Petagna is an old school centre-forward, the type of striker like Fernando Llorente or Pierre-Andre Gignac who Marcelo Bielsa has built his previously successful sides around.

He scored 17 goals last season for SPAL in Serie A and the extended Italian transfer window would give them time to buy a replacement.

Leeds have other options, perhaps a swoop for Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle, proven in the Championship.

They cannot allow the Roofe situation to go forward unaddressed.
