Liam Bridcutt was perhaps the most notable absentee from Leeds United’s squad for the opening day victory over Bolton Wanderers at the weekend.

When Liam Bridcutt was left out of the matchday squad for Leeds’ trip to Bolton on the opening day of the Championship season, it appeared to be confirmation that, unless an injury had been sustained, last season’s club captain was well down Thomas Christiansen’s pecking order at Elland Road, especially as he had not featured prominently in pre-season.

However, Christiansen has since clarified that Bridcutt does have a role to play during the coming campaign despite the curtain-raiser omission, in comments reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

But with the former Sunderland man entering the final year of his contract with the Whites, it would arguably be fair to suggest that Leeds should not rule out selling the midfielder despite the fact that his arrival seemed to be the deal that the fans craved just one year ago.

Bridcutt’s leadership has impressed Christiansen, and if the Dane feels that his departure would harm the squad morale, he should undoubtedly look to keep him for the coming campaign – especially as he could certainly contribute out on the pitch.

However, if Christiansen begins to feel that he is not indispensable as a leader, then perhaps moving him on should be an option that they seriously consider as it certainly appears that he could be in line to play a much less important role as a midfielder.

Eunan O’Kane and Kalvin Phillips were terrific alongside each other in the win over Bolton on Sunday, while Mateusz Klich was waiting in the wings on the bench and Ronaldo Vieira is a player that most supporters would have surely included in their strongest lineups before the game with the Trotters.

Therefore, it appears that Bridcutt faces an uphill battle trying to break into the team during the coming campaign, and with his contract running down, they would surely be wise to consider making a tough decision and letting him leave if a substantial bid comes in for him before the upcoming deadline.
