Leeds should make ambitious bid as Burnley target £1.5m Aaron Lennon move

Burnley are plotting a low seven-figure bid for Aaron Lennon, and that should perhaps tempt Leeds United into the market for their former winger.

After last season saw Leeds fall away in the play-off race in the second-half of the campaign, Thomas Christiansen – who, of course, was not the manager at the time – would be forgiven for wanting to make the most of the January transfer window to try and give the Whites the depth they need to capitalise on their current position in the Championship.

Leeds did not seem to show much ambition in last year’s window, with none of their January additions exactly capturing the imagination, and that seemed to have an impact on their top six hopes as their existing squad started to struggle.

Therefore, the Whites should perhaps look to show some ambition this month as they find themselves in a similar position with a considerable number of teams behind them in the table ready to pounce if they slip up.

One player who should perhaps come onto their radar is Aaron Lennon, with The Sun reporting that the Everton man is out of contract at Goodison Park in the summer and, so far, no deal appears to be in the pipeline.

Burnley are preparing a £1.5 million bid, according to The Sun, and that fee should perhaps tempt Leeds into the race, especially as you would imagine that the Toffees may not be looking for that much more given his contract situation – though with the 30-year-old continuing to feature sporadically for the first-team, they may well be keen to hold onto him for the duration of his deal.

At the very least, Leeds should be offering to match Burnley’s bid for Lennon – who came through the ranks at Elland Road before leaving for Tottenham in 2005 – in the hope that a return to his first club appeals to the Englishman.

He is obviously more likely to play regularly for Leeds, and can provide further depth going forward. And having left during the midst of the Whites’ financial implosion, perhaps he may relish the chance to help his first club get back into the Premier League.

It is certainly an ambitious idea at this point, but Leeds arguably need to start showing some further ambition in the transfer market if they hope to get themselves over the hurdle that proved too large last season.
