Leeds United have been linked with an international right-back, but they do not need him.
According to a recent report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are interested in signing Fleetwood Town right-back Conor McLaughlin this summer.
But if the claims are true that would be a mistake on the part of Whites manager Garry Monk, who should instead show his faith in Lewie Coyle to act as back-up for Gaetano Berardi.
Coyle is one of the gems of Leeds’ academy and last season he proved what all the fuss is about with some fine performances after making the step up from under-21 level.
After featuring predominantly as a substitute to begin with, by the end of the season Coyle was a starter for Leeds and he will not want to give up that privilege without a fight.
As Charlie Taylor proved when he replaced the outgoing Stephen Warnock at Elland Road, if you are good enough you are old enough and Coyle is both.
McLaughlin is 24, and a Northern Ireland international to boot, however his arrival could have a considerable negative impact on Coyle’s own career as he bids for regular first-team football.
Much may of course depend on Taylor’s future and which side of the pitch Berardi is playing next season and beyond. But assuming the left side is covered, Monk should put his faith in the Swiss star and the exciting youngster as he bids for a perfect start to his Leeds tenure.
