Robbie Gotts should be the next academy starlet that Leeds United hand a contract to.
Leeds handed their supporters another reason to be cheerful towards the end of last week with the news that Callum Nicell has been handed a new contract at Elland Road after a bright run for the under-23s.
Nicell is still awaiting his first-team debut, but is impressing for Carlos Corberan’s men and threatened to break into the senior side last season, so it is a great boost to get him extending his contract – and Leeds should waste little time lining up the next extension that they hope to agree.
Robbie Gotts has been with Leeds for several years and has established himself as an important player for the under-23s. According to transfermarkt however, his contract expires at the end of the season.
The 18-year-old scored Leeds’ fifth in their 5-0 win over Bristol City on Friday and was arguably one of the most impressive players on a pitch that also included the likes of Lewis Baker and Patrick Bamford.
Gotts is seemingly threatening to push towards the first-team in the coming months and offers Marcelo Bielsa the kind of versatility that should appeal to the head coach given that he has always preferred working with a smaller squad.
He is predominantly a winger, but is genuinely impressing in at right-back, arguably pushing ahead of Bryce Hosannah in the pecking order at Thorp Arch.
Leeds are struggling to get anything wrong at the moment, and agreeing a new contract with another of the most talented prospects in the academy would provide another boost as the Whites look to keep their early-season momentum.
