Chris Samba is currently training with Aston Villa but Leeds should be keeping an eye on the free agent.

Chris Samba is currently with Aston Villa at their pre-season training camp in Portugal as he searches for a new club after leaving Panathinaikos in January.

The Birmingham Mail reports that Steve Bruce is still considering giving a contract to the free agent if he manages to impress him ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

It was initially thought that Bruce was just allowing Samba to join up with Villa to improve his fitness and any chances of him being signed permanently were lost when the Midlands club landed John Terry.

However, that is not the case, although the presence of fellow centre-backs Nathan Baker, James Chester, Tommy Elphick and Micah Richards – along with Terry – at Villa Park currently does mean that some would probably have to be offloaded before the 33-year-old could join.

Therefore Leeds United should be keeping a close eye on proceedings, especially as Bruce is said to be impressed with the shape Samba is in despite having not played competitively for eight months.

Goal understands that the Whites are on the hunt for a new central defender and despite his age, the Republic of the Congo international’s significant Premier League experience (171 games) with Blackburn Rovers and QPR could make him a hugely useful asset at Championship level.
