Leeds United have already shown that they are prepared to tie their best players down, so a new deal for Chris Wood should arguably be offered.

After such a promising season in the Championship, Leeds are unsurprisingly facing a battle trying to keep one of their most impressive players in Chris Wood with the Daily Mirror reporting last month that a number of Premier League sides are keen on signing the New Zealander.

The Whites currently have some leverage in trying to keep Wood at Elland Road with the Yorkshire Evening Post reporting that he has two years left on his contract, so the club should not feel forced to sell him unless the player wants to leave at any stage or if they receive an unbelievable offer.

However, the year-long saga surrounding Charlie Taylor’s future should convince new owner Andrea Radrizzani to try and open talks with the 25-year-old as soon as possible in an attempt to extend that deal, as they will surely want to try and avoid any chance of a repeat of the situation that has seen Taylor’s reputation amongst Leeds fans largely left in tatters.

It would also send out a great message.

Radrizzani recently suggested that his priority was for the club to keep their best players (via Yorkshire Evening Post), and he backed that up by extending Ronaldo Vieira’s deal shortly after completing his full buyout of the club.

Vieira’s potential means that his new deal is a tremendous statement from the Whites, but given the interest in Wood and the fact that he established himself as a talisman this past season, there is arguably no other contract at the club that could make a bigger statement if it was extended.

If they can agree a deal, some of the other Leeds players attracting interest will see that one of their key teammates is buying into the project and may feel more inclined to stick around also if they previously had any doubts.

It would also surely boost their chances of enjoying a successful window as potential targets may be impressed by the way the club is being proactive in looking to keep their best players.
